Michael Hutwelker, a 6-2 goalie from Lahaska, Pa., has signed a national letter of intent to play lacrosse for Virginia Military Institute.
Hutwelker, who is attending Mercersburg Academy in Mercersburg, Pa., as a postgraduate student this year, made more than 200 saves during the 2012 season at Valley Forge Military Academy. He lettered four years in lacrosse and three years in football. He has a career save percentage of 68 percent.
Hutwelker also attended New Hope Solebury High School in New Hope, and played club lacrosse for LB3 Lacrosse Club of Philadelphia (coached by John Banks) and New Hope Solebury Lacrosse Club (coached by Pat Ryan).
“Michael has very quick hands and, in addition to being left-handed, poses problems for opposing offensive players because of his athleticism,” Mercersburg head coach Mark Schindler said. “It takes everyone a few shots to get used to his setup and style. He is developing into a very solid college-level goalie and I think the coaches at VMI will be excited to have him as a part of their program.”
